There is a drawer in a lot of backcountry houses with three Wi-Fi extenders in it. All three were bought to fix the same thing: the router is in the house, and the gate is a long way out.
We see that drawer often enough that it is worth explaining what is actually going on, because nobody in it did anything wrong.
The number on the box is not a lie. It is just from somewhere else.
Range figures are measured in open air with a clear line between the two radios and nothing else competing. That is a real measurement. It is also a room, and you do not live in a room.
Between your router and your gate there is a wall, probably a few. There may be a metal roof, which is close to a mirror as far as Wi-Fi is concerned. There is likely a stand of oak or pine, and leaves are mostly water — water is very good at absorbing the exact frequency your Wi-Fi runs on, which is why a link that works fine in February gets strange in May. There is often a rise you stopped noticing years ago, because you drive over it every day.
Each one of those takes a bite. By the time you are standing at the gate holding a phone with one bar, the box was never describing your property.
Why the third extender did not help either
An extender repeats what it can hear. If it is sitting at the edge of usable signal, what it hears is weak, and a weak signal repeated is still a weak signal — you cannot amplify what did not arrive.
There is a second cost that is less obvious. Most extenders talk to the router and to your laptop on the same channel, so they take turns: listen, then repeat, then listen again. Add a second extender to reach farther and it takes turns with the first one. The link gets longer and slower at the same time, which is why chaining them so often feels worse than the single one did.
None of this is a defect. It is what the device is for. It is just not what a thousand feet of dirt asks for.
What actually covers the distance
A point-to-point bridge is not a stronger extender. It is a different shape of answer.
Your router is omnidirectional — it shouts in every direction, and most of those directions are sky and dirt. A directional antenna spends all of it on one line. Two of them, aimed at each other, hold a link across a distance that no amount of shouting from the house will ever reach. That is how a barn, a shop, or a gate ends up on the same network as the kitchen.
It asks for a few things in return, and we would rather say so up front:
- A clear look between the two ends. Not a wish — go stand at the gate and see whether you can see the roofline of the house. If a ridge is in the way, no antenna fixes that. A relay does, and that is a different build.
- Power at the far end. Sometimes that is the whole project, and it is better to know on day one than on installation day.
- Weatherproofing and grounding. Anything on a mast out here eventually meets a storm.
Before you spend anything
Walk out to the gate and look back at the house. Then answer one question: what actually needs to be out there? A camera, a gate opener, and a laptop in the shop are three different jobs, and the honest answer changes what you should build.
